9. Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh with a population of 68,64,602 is ranked 9th in the list of top 10 least populated states in India. Himachal Pradesh is a mountainous state with its most of the area located on the foothills of Himalaya Mountain.
Next on this list is Tripura with a population of 36,73,917, which is a land locked state bordered by Bangladesh, Mizoram and Assam. Tribal people form a significant part of the total population, which is about 30% of the total population of the state.
Meghalaya, also known as the Scotland of the East has occupied 7th place in the list of top 10 least populated states in India. It is another state in India, where Tribal people make the majority of the total population in the state.

Manipur is the sixth least populated state in India with a population of 25,70,390.

Nagaland is another mountainous state in this list, which became part of India in the year 1963. The state is inhabited by 16 major tribes with each tribe having different culture, tradition and language.
Nagaland is comprised of 11 districts and out of them Pheak is the least populated district with a population of 1,48,000. Also, the people of this state speak more than 36 different languages.
With a population of 14,58,545, Goa is next on this list, which is famous across the country for its festivals and parties. Goa is the state in India with the highest percentage of urban population, which is about 50% of the total population of the state.
3. Arunachal Pradesh
Arunachal Pradesh with a population of 13,83,727 is next on this list, which was established in the year 1987. Arunachal Pradesh is one of the most linguistically richest states in India and a home of more than 30 distinct languages.
Arunachal Pradesh has a high untapped hydroelectric potential, which can be used for the generation of power and irrigation purpose. The state is also known for its natural beauty and visited by a large number of tourists every year.
Mizoram with a population of 10,97,206 stand at 2nd in the list of top 10 least populated stated in India. Mizoram is also the state with the highest concentration of tribal people, which is about 95% of the total population of the state.
More than 90% of the area of the state is under forest cover, which makes it one of the states with the largest forest cover. Mizoram has 8 districts, of which Saiha is the least populated district.
With a population of 6,10,577, Sikkim is the least populated state in India, which became state of India in the year 1975. Sikkim is a land locked state in India, which is bordered by West Bengal, Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet.
