Though there are several types of universities in India which are run and governed by government bodies, private bodies, but the below list is to bring into light purely deemed universities which exists in India.
Firstly, understanding what “Deemed University” is:
The answer to this is quite vaguely depicted in section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, pertaining to deemed-to-be-university. Therefore, there is no exact definition, but in common parlance it can be depicted as a university carrying the below salient features:
1) Deemed universities are not required to abide by the norms or guidelines laid by any other university in matters concerning to administration.
2) It has been conferred upon an autonomous or self-governing status granted by the Department of Higher Education in the Union Human Resource Development Ministry of India, on the advice of the UGC.
3) Deemed university are high performing institutes that enjoys privileges like that of a regular university. These universities has been vested with legal powers and right to exercise on matters concerning courses granted, grading system, teaching methodology, syllabi, guidelines for the admissions, examinations, fees etc.
4) Deemed university is treated like a university/single institution only unlike, the private university under which many institutes can fall.
5) These universities don’t take or give any sort of affiliations from/to any state institution/university, whether central or state university. Thus, enabling it to award the degrees on its own name.
6) A deemed-to-be-university essentially has research in chosen fields of specialisation an integral part of its activities, other than merely being a teaching institute.
[N.B.: Most Deemed Universities are affiliated to the UGC (University Grants Commission) or the AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education) and also are recognized for their quality education. It was the desire of government to accord the status of the universe upon deserving institutes so as to make available options to students, as there were ‘few’ universities in India. Setting up deemed university is beneficial to both the university as well as the government as it calls for lesser intervention, liberty and also it satiates the mushrooming quest for knowledge seekers.]
